21: The Story of Roberto Clemente
Wilfred Santiago
Just about every boy likes to toss a baseball around, but what turns that same boy into a passionate big league player and a world humanitarian?
Author and artist Wilfred Santiago captures the grace and fire of baseball's greatest Latino player, Roberto Clemente. In this graphic biography, illustrated in spare modern black and white drawings with a hint of Pittsburgh Pirates yellow and a dash of blue, we get to follow
Clemente from his birth in rural Puerto Rico in 1934 to his tragic death when his plane crashed into the Caribbean Sea in 1972.
As a teen, Clemente was very talented in track and field events, and it probably won't surprise you to learn that he always loved baseball best! At seventeen, he was playing on the Puerto Rican Winter League when he was spotted by Big League scouts. Just three years later, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
