Drawing From Memory
Allen Say
Imagine wanting to do something...knowing that you are fated to do something...longing to be someone that will displease your father totally. Growing up in post World War II Japan, Allen Say knew he wanted to be a comic book illustrator. But his strict, decidedly nontraditional Japanese father had other plans for him.

By age twelve, Allen was sent to live with his grandmother. Since the woman disliked Allen, she rented him his own one-room apartment, a simple place with a desk. It was understood that Allen
would go to a more prestigious school and totally concentrate on his studies.

Allen had other ideas. He turned the study into his art studio. As his angry father shunned him, Allen turned to another man, famed Japanese cartoonist Noro Shinpei. This man became Allen's mentor and spiritual father, training him rigorously in the career he wished to pursue.

With Noro's help. Allen found the encouragement he needed and followed his dream.
