It is the 1930s and the nation is in the midst of the worst depression ever. Ten-year-old Enrico's Italian immigrant family has been hit as hard as anyone else. But finally, his father has found work and his mother isn't crying as much.
No one takes time off, so this one day spent on the beach with his mother and father is a true celebration. When his father goes off for a smoke and an hour later is still gone, Enrico wanders off to find him. He discovers a cave and, in a

terrifying moment, watches as his father is killed by a raging dragon.
In New York City, dragon fighting has become a huge illegal sport. Dragons usually avoid humans but the gangsters train them for battle. Enrico's father was a dragon egg stealer for crime boss Christoforo Boccioni. With his father dead, Enrico is determined to take his father's place. He wants to steal the babies of the dragons he now hates so much and get back at the crime boss that caused his father's death.
