Turning sixteen is a scary thing in this world.

On her sixteenth birthday, Beatrice Prior must choose one of five predetermined factions. Each faction lives its life based on the one human characteristic they value the most: honesty, peacefulness, selflessness, bravery, and intelligence. Her choice will define her identity for life.

Will she stay an Abnegation, living a totally
selfless life like her family? Or will she become a Dauntless, a wild gun-toting tattooed unrestrained adventurer?

There’s just one problem. Beatrice knows she has strengths from more than one faction. That means she is a Divergent.

And in this “perfect” society, the dangerously controlling leaders do not allow Divergents to live.
