In 1950s New York City, teenager Kit Corrigan struggles to make a living, or even to find a place to live. Her decisions to flee from her Providence, Rhode Island, family and to break up with her uncouth and rowdy boyfriend, Billy, suddenly don’t seem like such a good ones.

After being offered a marginal role as a chorus girl in a Broadway show, Kit finds that her hoped-for career in theater doesn’t look too promising, either. So she is not surprised with herself—not really—when she accepts the offer
of Billy’s father, Nate Benedict, for an apartment and a job in a prestigious nightclub. Suddenly, Kit is part of a new and exciting crowd.

The “string attached” to Mr. Benedict’s proposal is that Kit has to try to get back together with Billy, and keep tabs on him while he is in the army. But that duty soon evolves to include spying on other people—important people who attend the club.
