Umbrella Summer
Lisa Graff
How do you protect yourself from everything?

Ten-year-old Annie tries to do just that after her older brother Jared suddenly dies from a rare heart ailment. Annie pores over medical texts, wears a helmet even in the car, and invents turtle races to see who can ride their bikes the slowest.

Annie's quirky behavior puzzles and alienates her friends. Her whole family seems to be paralyzed by grief. Her dad is there physically but not emotionally. Her mom refuses to talk about Jared.
Annie feels alone and has put up invisible umbrellas to shield herself from the grief.

Mrs. Finch, recently widowed, moves into the old house on the block. She also needs someone to talk to, and she's willing to listen to Annie. Together they talk about sadness, loss, and death. Annie wants to close those invisible umbrellas and get on with her life.

She also wants to create a tribute to her brother. But what can she do that would also help her parents?
