Eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern, were abandoned by their mom years ago, left to be raised by their grandparents. Delphine has grown up beyond her years. She is wise and has become protective of her sisters, like any older sibling.

In the summer of 1968, Delphine’s grandparents send them to Oakland, California, to see their mother. When they hear of Oakland, all the girls can think of is Disneyland and the movie stars they could meet.
Their uninterested mother has other plans. Instead of treating them to a summer of fun and adventure—and a renewal of their love for one another, as the girls expect—their mother, Cecile, drops them off at a community center every day and hints forcefully that she doesn’t want to see them until suppertime.

At the community center, Delphine and her sisters are introduced to the Black Panther revolution at the height of its controversy and power.
