Eva Nine may be the last human on the planet known as Orbana. For all her twelve years of life she has lived in an underground sanctuary, raised by the robot Muthr—the Multi-Utility-Task-Help-Robot—and taught by her seemingly all-knowing Omnipod.

One day, Eva finds a scrap of cardboard. A scrap of cardboard with a picture of a robot, a man, and a girl on it. Hope springs up inside her: what if she isn’t the last human? She begs for 		the chance to go to the mysterious surface world to look.

Her chance comes sooner than she expected.

A hunter named Besteel invades Eva’s sanctuary, intent on capturing her. Eva, Muthr, and her Omnipod escape and are exposed to the amazing wildness of the surface world, where giant insects and walking trees reign supreme. They are taken in by two strange surface-
