In the steely black of night, a family of African American slaves, chilled with doubt and fear, creeps from the plantation, sneaking silently past the snoring overseer.
Always heading north, running barefoot through the deep dark woods, silently crawling on their bellies along the ground, hiding in the shadows, they do whatever it takes to get away. Along the way they encounter new friends, but are also in constant danger from brutal slave hunters. Forced to sleep under bushes and take
shelter in kind-hearted strangers’ homes, the terrified family is traveling by the way of the Underground Railroad.
Where are they heading?
With a few words on each page and haunting illustrations, each narrator recounts the fears, disappointment, and elation as their journey ends in failure or triumph.
