A happy day of Fourth of July celebrations turns to disaster when eleven-year-old Norm loses his hand to a grinder in his dad's meat market.
Norm recovers but life gets complicated when he tries to do even the simplest tasks with only one hand. His dad is silent, feeling guilty over the accident. His mother is fiercely determined that Norm becomes capable and independent.
Although his loyal friend Leon is there to help him at any task, Norm wants to do everything

himself. If he can't do something the regular way, he invents a new way. Stubborn but with a sense of humor, Norm blossoms. He excels in school as well as with his music and art.
But there is one thing Norm loves most of all—baseball. Can he learn to catch a ball one-handed? Can he play baseball good enough to win? Will the other guys want him on the team?
