How long can you go without saying a single word?

While working on a report about Mahatma Gandhi, fifth-grader Dave Packer is intrigued by the fact that Gandhi remained totally silent one day each week to “bring order to his mind.” Thinking it will be interesting, Dave tries to remain silent all day, a hard job for constant jabber-mouth!

Maddened by Lynsey Burgess nonstop talking at
lunch, Dave bets her that she can't stop talking for even five minutes. Lynsey accepts his bet but one-ups it! She bets that the girls in the class can stop talking for two whole days and dares the boys to do the same.

The rules are simple. The kids can answer the teachers' questions but can use only three words—no more. No talking after school or at home. Everyone is on the honor system to report to Lynsey and Dave.
