The Gateway Readers Award recognizes excellent literature written for high school students. It considers genre diversity, gender representation, range of reading level, and racial, social, political, economic, and religious diversity when selecting the nominees. The Gateway Award was named as such because reading is the gateway to knowledge and lifelong learning, because the teen years are the gateway to adulthood, and because Missouri was the gateway to the Old West.
