about the book

Weird! W-w-w-weird!! CRAZY WEIRD!!

While making a salad one day, Abby’s mother notices that Abby is missing an earring. When she reaches up to check her ear, the hard-boiled egg on the counter starts to spin. What is going on?

It turns out Abby has just one inexplicable and totally useless magical power…and it makes her feel like a total freak. Why can she spin eggs?

Abby heads to Camp Cadebra, a magic camp, to see if she can learn anything more about her quirky ability. There she meets other kids like herself. One kid can fog up a window by counting by two in Spanish in a weird voice. Another kid can levitate a half inch off the ground by thinking about buffaloes walking backwards in diapers.

W-w-w-weird!

But when she and a few other campers are recruited to attend a “super camp,” they find themselves part of a sinister plot, held in the top-secret facility by a shifty pharmaceutical company. The scientists subject the children to some really creepy experiments.

But it turns out Abby and her friends’ talents do have some valuable uses, which they put to use in a daring…and totally weird…escape!

teachingbooks-logoabout the author

Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, young David Pogue was a magic nerd. His interest in magic showed up again in Abby Carnelia’s story, the first book he wrote for young adults.

When you start researching David, you wouldn’t think he authored a fictional novel for younger readers. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale with Distinction in Music. He spent ten years working in New York City in the office of Music Theatre International and was a Broadway musical conductor. He even received an honorary doctor of music degree from Shenandoah Conservatory.

But what David is best known for is writing and speaking about technology. He is a personal tech columnist for the New York Times, has written numerous books including Mac for Dummies, and has written columns for Macworld magazine. He also appears on CNBC doing comic tech reviews, hosted a four-part PBS NOVA series about material science called “Making Stuff,” and created a Science Channel six-episode series It’s Geek to Me.

Often in the middle of controversies, David is still a frequent speaker at educational, government, and corporate events. He lives in Westport, Connecticut.
