about the book

Ben and his beloved pup, Aggie, are off on a new adventure. This time, the story is all about Aggie’s trip to the vet. Ben’s mommy explains that Aggie needs to be spayed, a procedure that will keep her healthy when she gets older and will prevent her from having puppies. Aggie is afraid of going, but Ben tells her to be brave—though he cries when he learns that Aggie has to stay overnight at the vet.

Ben is so excited to get Aggie back home and has all sorts of plans about how they will play together. But then the vet tells Ben that Aggie has to rest for a few days. Ben is so disappointed.

What’s worse, Aggie has to wear a protective cone around her neck to keep her from nipping at her stitches. Ben laughs at her problems getting around the house with the awkward cone sticking out all around her neck. Aggie is embarrassed at being called a cone head and a clown.

Ben starts to feel bad about poor Aggie’s predicament. Can he come up with something that will make Aggie feel better?

teachingbooks-bookabout the author

Lori Reis was born in Syracuse, New York, the oldest of four children. As a young child, she remembers all the wonderful books her grandfather read to her and running from the pickle police after snitching one of grandma’s sour dills. She found her imagination making mud pies and rolling down the green grassy hills of the family’s upstate New York farm. Her imagination grew as she got her own library card and picked out books all by herself.

As she got older, the family moved a lot because her stepfather was in the army, and Lori discovered journaling. Besides daily entries, she also wrote poems and short stories. Unfortunately her imagination couldn’t make a college education a reality. Instead she married a wonderful man, David, who encouraged her writing. As the years passed, she was able to enroll in classes at the Institute of Children’s Literature and attend a writer’s workshop in Chautuaqua. Shortly after that her first published book, Super Sam, hit the store shelves.

Aggie, the character found in Lori’s Aggie and Ben series, is a real lovable hound that belonged to another guest Lori met at a barbecue. Lori and her daughter were feeding some bread to ducks when the dog streaked down to the water’s edge, gave a great big bound, and splashed down right in the middle of the ducks. They scattered squawking, and Aggie traipsed out of the water, very proud of what she had done. Right at that moment, Lori knew she had found the hero of her next book!

Today, Lori lives in Tigard, Oregon, with David, Molly the German shepherd pup, Rocky the fish, and five chickens. Their three children are all grown and on their own. Lori has finally gone back to college at Brigham Young University where she is studying writing and editing

teachingbooks-authorabout the illustrator

Frank W. Dormer is an author and an illustrator. He works only on picture books, claiming that anything more than 32 pages totally confuses him! He is a very talented artist with a funky offbeat, child-like imagination that shows up when he is wielding a paint brush. He also has a wild, sarcastic attitude. If you ask him to list his books to date, he’s most like to say he doesn’t date books at all, they are way too flat! And if he invites you to breakfast, watch out for the frog he just might hide under your napkin! He’s a bit of a prankster!

Frank lives in Branford, Connecticut, with his wife and three boys. He says he is a daddy first, an illustrator second, and an author third. He is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design and, when he isn’t illustrating books, he teaches art to students in kindergarten through fourth grade. His principal won’t let him teach at any other schools. He says the principal is a real meany!

Frank works in a very messy studio the size of a closet. Books are strewn everywhere. When he gets an assignment to illustrate a book, he starts out by mowing the lawn, folding the laundry, and daydreaming. Then he starts a sketch book which he fills with doodles. When his ideas are pretty well set, he turns on loud lively music, draws very fast, and keeps everything very simple! He says he has the best life. Someone pays him to daydream and doodle!
