about the book
Mike is despondent. A carpenter, he’s been out of work for a while, and the interview he just went to looks like a no-go. With less than a dollar’s worth of change in his pocket, he can’t even afford to get his son, Cam, a birthday gift.
When he sees a sign by the side of the road advertising cheap toys, he goes to look. For less than a dollar, all the strange vendor can offer is a plain cardboard carton. But it comes with a couple of rules that ABSOLUTELY CANNOT BE BROKEN. All unused cardboard must be returned and Mike cannot ask for more. How strange!
So Mike takes the box home knowing it is the worst present ever. Cam makes the best of the sad situation, accepting the crappy gift with a big smile. Together father and son work late into the night, fashioning a golem-looking boxer out of the cardboard, naming their creation Bill.
In the morning, they discover Bill is alive! This good-hearted creature spits out new pieces of the magical cardboard that seems to have the power to know the thoughts and desires of its user. Before Mike realizes, they have broken the rules!
Disaster strikes when the town’s rich bully, Marcus, decides he wants the magical cardboard for himself. Just plain bad, Marcus likes to hurt people. He turns the cardboard into an army of monsters who threaten everyone! It’s up to Mike and Cam…and Bill too…to stop the snotty rich thug and his corrugated army.
