Those that sought safety in the caverns survived without ill effect, and now are the ruling class. Called Luddites, they have outlawed all technology. Those that remained above-ground suffered from mental abnormalities and are known as the Reduced. The Reduced and their children, the Post, labor for the Luddites and, in return, the Luddites are responsible for their well-being. Kai had been a lowly Post, just one of many Elliot felt responsible for.
