about the book

Finn Easton is plagued by disaster. When he was a child, a dead horse fell off of a bridge, injuring him and killing his mother.

Since then, his writer dad turned him into a character in a sci-fi novel, which became a cult classic and gained him unwanted attention.

And when he has seizures, he sees ghosts.

How can Finn create an identity that is not weighed down by disasters that are out of his control and overshadowed by his crazy best friend Cade? Then Julia, Finn’s first love, moves away and he believes his luck has completely run out. Finn and Cade decide to take a road trip to Oklahoma to relieve Finn’s restlessness.

Is this the trip that will redefine Finn? Or are there too many disasters on the road in front of him?

about the author

Andrew Smith was born in California and grew up in a family that liked to travel all over the world. He always knew he wanted to be a writer, but he never thought of publication. His parents opposed his desire to write, but he wrote anyway. He went to university to study Political Science, Literature, and Journalism.

While trying to figure out what to do with his life, he drifted from job to job. He has worked in a metals mill, as a longshoreman unloading bananas and imported cars, and as a musician, to name just a few jobs. The idea to publish his writing happened only when challenged by a friend. He has since published articles and short stories, along with his eight books.

Every book Andrew has written seems completely different from his previous books, because Andrew says that he is easily distracted and bored. He says, “I can’t endure sitting through things that I’ve seen done before, so there is a conscious effort on my part to try to do something that I’ve never tried and tell a story that I’ve never heard. You have to get into kind of weird territory when you put those constraints on your performance.”

Andrew today lives in Southern California. He has three tattoos from his books, and will probably get more.
