about the book

Teenager Alex Halprin thinks this weekend will be relaxing. He got out of going on a family trip to Illinois and plans on playing computer games and hanging out with friends.

He didn’t count on the long-overdue-for-an-eruption Yellowstone super volcano erupting this same weekend. Ash fills the skies, forever changing the landscape of the American west. Anarchy erupts, and Alex’s town is filled with looters and murderers after panic takes hold.

Knowing he might die otherwise, Alex sets off for the east, away from the ash and hopefully towards his family. Along the way he meets another survivor named Darla Edmunds, a spunky girl who has a gift with mechanics. As the two teens slowly fall in love, nuclear winter sets in, and they discover that survivors are being rounded up by FEMA.

Can Alex and Darla evade FEMA’s camps and find their families before winter takes their lives?

Mike Mullin made his first sale as a writer in sixth grade. His teacher, Mrs. Brannon, paid students for using unusual words in their essays. Mike used the word “tenacious.”

Ever since, Mike’s life has had something to do with literature. He wrote his first novel in elementary school—Captain Poopy’s Sewer Adventures—which will never, ever, be published, and he has been writing ever since. His first real job was in Indianapolis’s Central Library, shelving books.

His second was in a bookstore from which he almost got fired due to his earrings.

Mike paid his way through college and graduate school working as a reference assistant for Indiana University’s library. He also worked in his mom’s business, Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore in a variety of positions, from manager to marketing consultant.

Ashfall is Mike’s first published book. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife and three cats. He also holds a black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. So, yeah, watch out!
