about the book

In this new re-imagining of the origin of the Dark Knight, the familiar is no longer the expected. Rather than set somewhere in the past, this is a modern day tale, where Gotham is a very dark, ugly place. Our caped crusader is no full-fledged superhero badass beating the hell out of criminals, but a rash, hard-headed twenty something who is vulnerable, fallible, and very angry. There are no cool gadgets or techie advanced vehicles. It is not the same old tired Batman story!

Though trained in acrobatics, investigative techniques, and martial arts by his guardian Alfred Pennyworth, a tough-as-nails ex-Royal special-forces marine, Bruce is not an expert at any of these skills. He and Alfred are increasingly conflicted over Bruce’s goals and Alfred’s ideologies. Still Bruce is driven to find and punish the men responsible for the murder of his parents, his father Dr. Thomas Wayne, who was running for mayor, and his mother, Martha Arkham Wayne. Confusing his goals and needs is the knowledge that his mother comes from the criminally insane Arkham family and he could be equally cursed.

Bruce’s friend, Jessica Dent, begins her new role as the mayor of the corrupt and troubled Gotham City, aided by her twin brother and the city’s sitting District Attorney, Harvey. Bruce and Harvey have always had a tumultuous relationship as rivals. Tthough he blames the police for never solving his parents’ murderers, Batman joins forces with Gotham City Police Detective James Gordon and his sarcastic alcoholic partner Harvey Bullock.

This time they face two killers. The first takes Batman into the city’s sewers after the twisted Waylon Jones, a man who suffers from a nasty skin disease. Known as the monstrous Killer Croc, his violent crimes cannot be ignored. The second is a new arch villain whose twisted brand of anarchy is terrorizing the entire city. Two Face leaves clues to help in his own capture but Batman quickly finds out that this riddler doesn’t screw around. Nobody knows what his endgame is.

Bruce Wayne may have been trained by one of the best—but is Batman truly ready to tackle two of the worst villains ever?

about the author/illustrator

Geoff Johns is a prolific and award-winning comic book and graphic novel writer, a television scriptwriter, and a film and television producer.

He began life on January 25, 1973, in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in the affluent Grosse Pointe neighborhood. His interest in comics was sparked by a find in his grandmother’s attic: a whole carton of 1960s and 1970s comics including some vintage Flash, Superman, Green Lantern, and Batman.

After attending Michigan State University where he studied media arts, screenwriting, and film production, Geoff headed to Los Angeles, California. Looking for an internship, he cold-called the offices of film director Richard Donner and, while being transferred to various people, Geoff was astounded when Richard actually picked up the phone by accident…which lead to a long conversation and a job offer!

Geoff started out copying scripts and, after just two months, became a production assistant for Richard, who he considers to be his mentor. From there, his career took off. He worked on many comic book series, several television and movie scripts, and is currently the chief creative officer for DC Comics. He is considered by many to be one of the most popular, imaginative, and experimental writers in the industry today.

Besides keeping busy with all his writing, Geoff also co-owns Earth-2 Comics, a store in Northridge, California.

Geoff lives in Los Angeles.
