about the book

In humanity’s future, humans, aliens, robots, and cyborgs live together in tense peace. Cyborgs are the lowest of the low, and Cinder is one of them.

At age eleven, for mysterious reasons, Cinder’s body was altered—she has a mechanical hand and foot, wetware and software in her brain, and parts of her heart are silicone. As a teen she has become a very skilled mechanic in the city of New Beijing, where her beloved foster father took her after a terrible car accident took her real family.

Now her stepfather is gone, and her stepmother has become terribly cruel. When a plague breaks out over the Eastern Commonwealth— one of the districts of the new world formed after World War IV—Cinder’s beloved sister is affected by it, and many of her friends, but not her. Somehow she is immune.

When the charming Prince Kai happens to meet her, he asks her—a mere cyborg!—to the upcoming ball being thrown in his honor. What no one on this future Earth knows is that the evil Lunar Queen Levana has her sights set on Prince Kai as well.

And even as the ball gets rolling, the invasion force from the Moon is beginning to arrive!

teachingbooks-logoabout the author

Her parents tell her that her first spoken word was “story,” and Marissa Meyer seems to have run with that, having wanted to be a writer since she first knew the job existed. Two of her other first words that she has also continued applying in her life are “bath” and “cookie.”

Also, her favorite toy as a baby was a squishy, soft book. Her life was set from the get-go.

At the age of fourteen she was introduced to anime and manga, and soon after began writing fanfiction for stories like Sailor Moon.

She wrote under the pen name Alicia Blade and even got a story published under that name, “The Phantom of Linkshire Manor,” which can be found in Bound in Skin, a Gothic romance anthology.

At sixteen years of age Marissa was employed at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Tacoma, Washington, which she called “The Spag.” After high school she attended Pacific Lutheran University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and Children’s Literature. After getting a master’s degree in Publishing from Pace University, she worked as an editor, freelance typesetter, and proofreader.

Then, on one of the greatest days of her life, someone decided to publish Cinder, her first novel! She has since written three more books in the series inspired by the Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White fairy tales.

Marissa lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and their three cats—Calexandria Josephine, Stormus Enormous, and Blackland Rockwell III. Her favorite non-bookish things are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and still playing dress-up!
