about the book

Aaron Archer remembers everything he’s ever heard or read…everything. He can spew facts left and right. Too bad not many other thirteen-year-olds care for his encyclopedic knowledge. And although he is book-smart, when Aaron is expected to access and share his emotions at school with his classmates, he doesn’t know how to do it. This can make social situations awkward.

Audrey Alcott also has a special gift: she can tell when someone is lying. This ability makes it hard for her to be in social situations, too, because she doesn’t understand why people lie. In fact, she’s caught so many people lying that she’s built a wall around herself and trusts no one. After all, who wants to deal with the hurt that comes from liars?

At first glance, their “superpowers” sound pretty awesome, but they also make Aaron and Audrey social outcasts at school. The parents of both kids decide that to help their children find a balance between fact and emotion, and lying and trust, they should be sent to a summertime wilderness camp to work things out for themselves.

Out in the wilds of the desert, Aaron and Audrey meet and realize that when they come together and work as a team—trusting one another and embracing their gifts—they will make a perfect pair!teachingbooks-book

about the author

Before she became a writer of prose, Marisa de los Santos was a poet, holding an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston. In fact, her first book, From the Bones Out, was a collection of her poetry.

In the spring of 2003, Marisa and her husband, David Teague, also a writer, moved to Wilmington, Delaware, and that summer was the first time Marisa thought she would write a novel, non-poetry. That book, Love Walked In, became very popular, was translated into fourteen languages and made the bestseller lists. From then on, Marisa has tried her hand at several more novels, including Saving Lucas Biggs.

Marisa and David still live in Delaware, now with their two children, Charles and Annabel. In her free time Marisa likes taking ballet classes, and she also volunteers at her kids’ school.
