about the book

Park Sheridan has made it to his sophomore year in high school by keeping his head down. Half-Korean, he doesn’t connect with many other kids, so he spends his time listening to the alternative rock band, The Smiths (as it is the middle of the 1980s) and reading Alan Moore’s Watchman comics.

It so happens that these comics are the reason he begins a surprising and tantalizing relationship with the quirky new girl, fire-haired Eleanor. When she gets on the bus her very first day of school and is taunted by Steve, Tina, and the rest of their group, she ends up forced to sit next to Park, and the next thing Park knows she is reading his comics over his shoulder!

Is it too good to be true?

Yes, yes it is. These two star-crossed misfits have everything stacked against them. Park and Eleanor’s families could not be more different. Her step-father is abusive, and when things at home become dangerous, Eleanor fears she will have to flee, leaving Park behind…

teachingbooks-logoabout the author

Put bluntly, Rainbow Rowell is a writer. It is that simple.

She writes about adults sometimes, and sometimes young adults and teens, as in Eleanor & Park. No matter what kind of person she is writing about, they always seem to be talkers, who feel like their lives are messes, and who fall in love—often with similarly hampered people.

When she is not writing, Rowell reads comics, daydreams about going to Disney World, and argues about things not worth arguing about.

Rowell lives with her husband and children in Nebraska.
