about the book
This post-apocalyptic world is a bleak, sinister and primeval dystopia. Humans never see daylight. They live underground in abandoned subway tunnels. They’re only given a name if they manage to survive to the age of 15, when they are put to work in one of the three classes; they can be hunters, builders or breeders.
During naming ceremonies, items are strewn on the ground in front of a “nameless brat”, and he or she is cut. Whatever object their blood touches first becomes that person’s name. During her naming ceremony, Girl 15’s blood touches a playing card. Hence her name…Deuce.
Deuce’s job is hunting. She ventures into the forbidding tunnels to check traps for meat … and to fight the Freaks, ferocious mutant humans who will eat anything. Deuce is partnered with Fade, a mysterious boy who didn’t always live in the enclave, because he was born a topsider. He fights with intensity, but he knows how to love, too.
Do Fade and Deuce have the will to survive? And can they remain human—against all odds?
about the author
After being a clown, a voice actress, a clerk, and a part-time stray kitten rescuer, Ann Aguirre put her degree in English Literature to use and became an author. She has no favorite book—she likes them all! She also likes action movies, emo music, and Doctor Who.
One of the most frequent questions Ann gets is, “Do you ever sleep?” She gets asked this because it seems like she is always working. That is nearly true—she gets up, writes three thousand words, edits other words, does drafts, answers mail…. At five she quits though, to make food for her family and hang out.
Ann’s childhood house was bright yellow and situated next to a cornfield. Her house now is in Mexico, where she lives with her husband, kids, two cats, and a dog.
