about the book
Thirteen-year-old Trenton Coleman lives in the steam-powered mountain town of Cove. In Cove, “creativity” is a swear word, and inventions or new technology are illegal.
Too bad Trenton is mechanically-minded. His knack for technology causes the townsfolk of Cove to consider him a suspicious character, so they keep a close eye on him…
When Trent uncovers blueprints for a strange creation, his interest is piqued—who was building this odd thing, and why? The clues soon lead him to local repair technician Kallista Babbage. Kallista’s father, Leo, was an inventor, who died in a dangerous explosion. The town officials use Leo’s death as a cautionary tale to keep people from creating anything new.
Together, Trent and Kallista learn that Leo’s last invention is tied to the very origins of Cove—and when they pick up where Leo left off, this strange creation will have serious consequences for Trent, Kallista, and Cove itself.
