about the book

Here are twelve poems, written in both English and Spanish, about animals that flutter and hum, stretch, dance, slither and leap! Each animal gets an English and a Spanish version of the poem. A cow grazing on grass enjoys a “Slow munch./ All day lunch,” which in Spanish comes to “Una comida/ sin fin.”

Not all the poems rhyme. Some alliterate. Some display word association, such as in a rainy scene where crows are illustrated with word pairs like “crass” and “brash,” as well as “brujo” and “brusco. All are well crafted and mimic the beauty and playfulness of the world of animals.

Fireflies at Midnight by Marilyn Singer
Fourteen animals share poems about their lives, whether they are early morning, daytime, evening, or nightly creatures. An otter goes on a mudslide, a mole delves in his underneath world, a bat hunts mosquitoes in the night air, and a robin shares his song of the morning.

If Not for the Cat by Jack Prelutsky
Animals give hints about their lives from their own point of view—in haiku. Can you guess who they are? What creature peeks out a dark hole to see a nose and whiskers? Who undulates bonelessly through the water? And who moves so slowly through the trees? Turn the page to find out!

Summer Birds : The Butterflies of Maria Merien by Margarita Engle
