about the book
People die in the swirling mist that covers earth. The fogsickness caused humanity to take to the mountaintops and sky—to the Rooftop—in order to save what’s left of the human race.
Thirteen-year-old Chess and his crewmates work on a salvage airship, looking for artifacts down in the fog to keep from starving. They keep to a remote corner of the slum, living a small and quiet life—anything to avoid drawing Lord Kodoc’s notice.
Everyone with half a brain is scared of Lord Kodoc.
But surviving isn’t enough anymore. Mrs. E, the woman who adopted Chess and his friends, has fogsickness. Chess needs to find something BIG enough to pay for the cure.
A score that big would draw attention though. Is Chess willing to take the risk of exposing his secret? Or maybe it doesn’t matter. Lord Kodoc may be hot on their trail already…
