about the book

It started as just a glance while Rusty rode the bus to school that nasty cold October day. For just a moment, he saw a shivering German shepherd chained to a tree, without food or water. That isn’t right! He worried about the dog all day, and after school, he crept into the yard and gave the dog food. He knew it was wrong, but he had to do it

As the days passed, the dog remains chained and unfed, and each day Rusty returns with food. One day, the oddest thing happens. As Rusty kneels by the dog, he feels an animal brush up against him. When he turns, he sees the ghostly spirit of a collie! The ghost dog lets Rusty know that the shepherd is injured. Now Rusty will stop at nothing to save the German shepherd.

With the help of his friend, Andrew, the two unchain the shepherd and hide him in their old fort. Things become complicated when the owner accuses Rusty of stealing the dog. As Rusty enlists of aid of his mother, his teacher, the animal control officer, and the police, the ghost dog leads Rusty to two more abused dogs.

Will he be stealing them or rescuing them? Is he doing right or wrong?

Peg Kehret grew up in Austin, Minnesota, and she will tell you that she had a normal and happy childhood…except for the nine months she was hospitalized, paralyzed from the neck down, by polio. She did make a nearly full recovery and went on to dream about becoming a veterinarian …or a writer!

After a year at the University of Minnesota, Peg married Carl and they moved to California. They adopted two children, Bob and Anne, and Peg started writing radio commercials. She went on to write plays, magazine stories, and adult nonfiction books. But when she wrote her first book for a young person, she found her passion.

After their children were grown and until his death in 2004, Carl and Peg traveled in their motor home, giving Peg a chance to talk to students, teachers, librarians, and fellow writers all over the nation.

Peg now lives in a log home on a ten-acre wildlife sanctuary near Mt. Rainier National Park. She is active in animal welfare causes and has rescued pets, Lucy the dog, and her cats, Molly and Mr. Stray.
