about the book
For about a week after they solved a murder mystery over the summer in their small North Carolina town, Mo LoBeau and her friend Dale became famous for their Desperado Detective Agency. Then the week was over and they sunk back down into their regular fame levels—meaning, not famous at all.
That might change again. When Miss Lana becomes the quite mortified owner of an ancient-looking inn, the building in all likelihood is haunted. When Mo finds out about the ghost, and that the ghost might be historical and therefore worth some extra credit in her sixth-grade history class, she and Dale, the Desperado Detectives, eagerly take the case! (It beats interviewing elderly Tupelo Landing residents about the town’s 250th anniversary, at least.)
Whose ghost might it be? And why is it haunting the inn in the first place?
Along with some buried treasure, strange events in the woods, a missing moonshine still, and the impending financial ruin of Miss Lana, this should be quite the adventure and mystery!
about the author
Sheila Turnage was born in Jacksonville, NC, and grew up on a farm. She went to East Carolina University to study journalism, but that’s not when she decided to be a writer.
Sheila knew she wanted to be a writer way back when she was in first grade. She had written a story with a big, fat pencil, and her teacher liked it enough to let her read it to a class of third graders, who were like giants to her first-grade eyes at the time. That was when the writing bug bit her!
As soon as she was able to read, Sheila’s mother got her a library card, so she could have books in her house all the time. Sheila read and read and read, and says that because she lived on a farm she had lots of time to read. So it wasn’t a handicap at all, unlike some people might think, to live on a farm and try to be a writer!
Today Sheila still lives on a farm, but now with her husband, a smart dog named Jake, a dozen chickens, and a flock of guineas. Sometimes they have wild turkeys and deer visit them in their yard. And by the way, Sheila is “thrilled to her toes” to win a Newbery Honor for Three Time Lucky.
