about the book
Hilda, our turquoise-haired heroine, joins the Sparrow Scouts. She loves learning about building campfires and setting up shelters, but her first camping trip is cancelled due to the sighting of a large wolf-like creature prowling around and wrecking houses in Trolberg. Some people have even gone missing!
Thinking she could use the wolf as a chance to earn her first scout badge, Hilda returns home and sets up a tent in her bedroom, where she and her companion, the white and antlered fox-like creature,Twig, pour over books like the Greater Fjords Wildlife Chronicles. But she is quickly distracted by another concern: Something is displacing the Nisse—a bunch of misfit, gnome-like sprites who live in everyone’s houses, behind bookcases and “gaps in the floorboards.” With Nisse running around in the human world, who has time to hunt for a wolf?
Or are the two things really connected? When angry homeowners begin kicking the poor Nisse, who cannot help their energetic natures, out onto the streets, Hilda takes it upon herself to make the connection, help the Nisse, and uncover the truth behind the “wolf” terrorizing Trolberg!
about the author/illustrator
Luke Pearson was born in Stockton on Tees in 1987, grew up in Tamworth—a place, Luke remarks, which was nice and had a castle but no bookshops—which is northeast of Birmingham, and currently resides in Nottingham (all in England, if you didn’t know).
Luke probably got his love for art from his parents, even though neither made their living through art: His father was in IT and software development, but played music in his spare time, and though his mom, or “mum” as they say in England, was a solicitor’s secretary, Luke always saw her drawing or painting in her spare time. Luke, also, was drawing all the time as a kid. He loved the praise he got for his work, which is what spurred him on to keep doing it, especially from his Grandma, for whom he drew new installments of what he titled Super Rabbit every time he would visit.
Luke’s breakout hit, the Hildafolk series, came about because, in the back of his mind, he had always wanted to create a vaguely Scandinavian world. When Nobrow comics asked if he had any ideas, he created Hilda, drew her in a scene with some friends, and sent it in. He only had that one picture at the moment, so when they accepted his comic, Luke had to work fast to come up with an actual story!
Thankfully, he did, and now the series is a hit!
