about the book

A descendant of the famous van Helsing family of monster fighters, Max has taken over the family business—so to speak. (One of his forefathers battled THE Dracula.) His own father died young—a common fate for the monster fighters in his family.

Like many new chief executives, Max is leaving his own stamp on the family business: Max would rather rehabilitate the monsters than destroy them. Side-by-side with his best friend Syd, he battles fire phantasms, vampires, and ghouls with as much mercy as muscle. (As Abraham Lincoln said, “Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”)

Wrangling mystic fiends? He’s a wiz. Wrangling middle school? Well, that’s a different story. Max feels more at home with poltergeists than his peers. Except for Syd, of course.

When Max turns thirteen, however, normally good-natured monsters start attacking him with fervor. Sensing something is up, Max learns of a 300-year-old family curse and the release of a dangerous warlock that threatens humanity.
