about the book
Salem Hyde is unlike any kid in her class. What did you expect? She’s a witch! She has pigtails that look like bat wings, after all. She is also independent, stubborn, and impulsive. She thinks later, acts first, and ends up having to think up a lot of excuses in the end.
When she tried to use her magic, Salem ended up in the principal’s office, prompting her magical family to get her an animal companion to help her make good decisions.
Enter the talking cat, Percival J. Whamsford the III! (You can call him Whammy, but he doesn’t like it.) As a Magical Animal Companion, Whammy will help Salem learn the proper use of her magic.
An upcoming spelling bee has Salem itching for success. She may resort to magic, even though Whammy says not to. Of course, Salem, acting first, thinking last, casts a spell. It all goes wrong, but Whammy knows how to fix it.
