Crewel (Crewel World, Book 1)

about the book

Behind her back other girls whisper terrible things about Adelice Lewys: “incapable,” “awkward,” “artless.” Joke’s on them. Adelice wants to fail!

Why? In her society on Arras are the Spinsters, people who can manipulate reality, weave it like silk in a tapestry. The Guild runs everyone’s life on Arras, including their weather, their food and drink, and even whole lifetimes, if the Spinster is powerful enough. Worst of all, they can “rip” threads—taking people out of the timeline altogether, if they pose a threat.

Adelice has the powers of a Spinster, but she has been hiding them. She hates the Guild and feels that people should be able to run their own lives. But on her sixteenth birthday Adelice screws up. She uses her power, and the Guild discovers her. All Spinsters are forced to work for the Guild, and now Adelice is separated from everyone and everything she knew.

Adelice knows the Guild’s leaders are not benign, and now that she is trapped in the Guild (under guard, no less, but at least the two soldiers are handsome), Adelice decides she has to find a way to take down the Guild’s leader, the shadowy and enigmatic Creweler.

about the author

Gennifer Albin describes herself as a recovering academic. After earning her Master’s degree in English Literature, focusing on Eighteenth Century women’s studies, Gennifer became a teacher at both the high school and college level. When her kids were born, though, she stopped being a teacher and became a full-time mom. Then she became a full-time mom who writes books!

Gennifer loves strong coffee and daring imaginations, and she takes her heroines with plenty of sass. She is always on the lookout for another adventure, and she watches way too many episodes (or is it just the right amount?) of Doctor Who.
