Fraidyzoo

about the book

Little T and her family are all set to head out to the zoo when she freezes with fear. Though she doesn’t remember why, Little T is afraid of the zoo!

Determined to find out exactly what scared Little T, her loving family create all sorts of zany homemade costumes made from things found around the house.

“Did it jump in the road?” asks her mom, who sports V-shaped tongs like deer antlers.

“Could it give itself a shower?” asks her older sister, who wears two huge plastic bags on her ears and lifts her arm like an elephant’s trunk.

“Was it pink?” asks her dad as he prances across the room in a pink tutu with pink post-it-notes on his fingers like flamingo wings.

Going through the alphabet letter by letter, the family spends all day and into the night creating more and more elaborate creature costumes. It’s all so hilarious that Little T’s fears are banished, and she declares herself ready to go to the zoo.

But the next day, it is Little T’s older sister who freaks out as they enter the zoo! Now what…or who…is causing all the problems?

about the author

Thyra Heder is a storyboard artist, concept illustrator, muralist, and now a picture book author. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. The city is a great place for one of her favorite activities—drawing strangers!

She was raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in a family of loving, but bossy artists. Her first picture book, Fraidyzoo, is based on her family and is all about fears. As a kid, Thyra was afraid of sharks; now she finds them both terrifying and fascinating!

She got her art training at Brown University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. After she graduated, she created art for such big clients as Vogue, Coca-Cola, Nikon, NOVA, PBS, the FX Network, and the Discovery Channel. She also does architectural renderings and works with both traditional art materials and digital mediums.

Thyra admits that she is a bit of a procrastinator. When she puts off drawing or writing, she makes soup! At least then at the end of the day, she has accomplished something.
