Steelheart (Reckoners, Book 1)

about the book

Ten years ago, the great Calamity came, a burst of energy in the sky that turned normal men and women into Epics—superhero-like beings with extraordinary powers. Contrary to popular fiction, the Epics universally begin using their powers cruelly to rule mankind. No one fights them—who could?

Except for the Reckoners, ordinary humans who have vowed to find the Epics’ weaknesses and defeat them. They must spend their whole lives looking for the Epics’ weaknesses, and then carefully plan their assassinations.

Young David wants in on the Reckoners. The Epic known as Steelheart killed David’s father, but in the process, David gained an experience, an experience the Reckoners need.

He has seen Steelheart bleed.

about the author

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Brandon Sanderson enjoyed books while growing up but, like most kids, at some point he became bored with them. He was a stubborn non-reader, and it took an eighth-grade teacher, coincidentally named Miss. Reader, to inspire him with Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. Riveted by the epic fantasy, Brandon became an avid reader and even tried his hand at writing. He admits his first attempts were dreadful!

Brandon entered Brigham Young University (BYU) to study biochemistry with the hope of going into medicine. While on a missionary trip to Seoul, Korea, he decided that he missed writing more than chemistry, so he changed his major to English when he returned to BYU. Going to school during the day full-time and working an eight-hour shift as a hotel night clerk, Brandon wrote seven novels and accumulated a pile of rejection letters.

Feeling that his manuscripts where actually getting worse, Brandon decided to go back to BYU for a graduate degree in creative writing. He also vowed to stop writing with the intent to market…instead he wrote from his heart. He published his first novel for adults shortly after graduating!

Brandon lives with his wife, Emily, and their son, Joel, in American Fork, Utah. You might be interested in learning that Brandon’s college roommate was “Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings!

Firefight (Reckoners, Book 2) by Brandon Sanderson
Steelheart’s death should have satisfied David’s need for revenge, but it just left him with big questions and a hole in his heart, which, shockingly, has been filled by another Epic, Firefight. No one in Newcago can give him the answers he needs. Babylon Restored (the old borough of Manhattan) may hold the answers, but he’ll first have to face another High Epic, Regalia. To find Firefight, he’s willing to go on a quest even darker and more dangerous than the one he faced while hunting Steelheart.
