about the book
The aliens came in five waves.
After the first wave humanity lost all power. In the second wave was the war that humanity never saw coming—only those lucky enough survived.
Sixteen-year-old Cassie saw her mother die of the bio-engineered pestilence released in the third wave by the alien conquerors. The fourth wave was the “Silencers,” assassins sent to eradicate the few remaining humans. Cassie’s father died in the fourth wave.
Now as she awaits the fifth wave. Cassie is on her own. Her little brother is lost, and she cannot let herself trust another human being— the aliens have found a way to take over human bodies, use them to get close to survivors, and then kill them. Armed with a Luger, an M-16, plenty of ammo, and a large, sharp knife, Cassie has had to grow up fast and take charge of her own life.
To stay alone, solitary, is to stay alive. But when Cassie stumbles into the company of Evan Walker, she decides to risk a very brief partnership, even if it means the danger of talking to someone: Evan has information on the whereabouts of Cassie’s brother.
about the author
Rick Yancey wanted to be a writer from the time he was very young. He wrote his first novel at fifteen.
But the bushy-haired, gangly young man, scoring 9.5 on the geek meter, grew up feeling like an outcast, too shy to participate in the theater he loved or to push his writing abilities.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Rick returned to his home in Florida to pursue a career in the arts. He taught part time and dabbled in the theater, but ended up taking a job as a revenue officer for the IRS. He worked there for over ten years.
After publishing his memoir, Confessions of a Tax Collector, Rick turned to writing full time, penning series for both adults and young adults. He also works as a playwright and theater critic. Thinking back to his geeky, shy teenage years, you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Rick’s motto is “Never give up!”
Rick now lives near Gainsville, Florida, with his wife, Sandy, and their three sons.
