about the book
When, at the age of nine, Jordan Romero saw a mural of the tallest mountain on each continent at his elementary school, he set a goal to stand on each of those Seven Summits.
At the age of ten, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.
At the age of thirteen, he climbed Mount Everest.
And at the age of fifteen, he became the youngest person to climb all Seven Summits.
How did Jordan do it? What did he learn along the way? And what does being slammed by an avalanche feel like?
about the author
Jordan Romero holds the record of being the youngest person to climb the Seven Summits.
In fourth grade, he was inspired to climb the tallest mountain of each continent after seeing a mural of the seven mountains at his school. He wondered “what would it be like to stand on top of these mountains?”
With his father and stepmother, who are professional adventure racers, he started with Mount Kilimanjaro. At that point there was no intention to climb all seven summits, but once at the top, they figured “let’s just go for them all!”
When they climbed Mount Everest, Jordan was only thirteen and was too young to obtain a climbing permit for the Nepal route, which is the easier route, so they used the Tibet route which had no age restrictions at the time. One month after climbing Everest, age restrictions were placed on using the Tibet route as well. This virtually ensures that Jordan’s record will remain unbroken.
But Jordan doesn’t care whether or not his record is broken. He was out climbing the mountains for the experience and the fun.
He loves anything that involves snow, rock, and ice. Jordan is now trying to climb the highest peak in each of the 50 US states.
