about the book
When eight-year-old Quinny is forced to move from New York City out to middle of “No” and “Where” Whisper Valley, she is determined that nothing in the new town will be fun or interesting. However, longing for a new friend overcomes her sulkiness, and at last she introduces herself to Hopper, the boy next door.
Hopper, for his part, is not sure about having a girl as a friend. Isn’t that against third-grade rules? But he is won over by Quinny’s big smile and “cheeks with holes,” as he calls her dimples.
Quinny and Hopper couldn’t be more different. Quinny talks constantly, but Hopper likes to get straight to the point. Hopper exercises caution and looks for solutions, but Quinny does everything fast and focuses on the big ideas.
Actually, they sound like perfect friends for each other! Together Hopper and Quinny spend the summer in adventure, from chasing Freya the chicken to climbing trees and learning how to juggle.
But when school rolls around, a mean girl presents a new adventure—or is it a challenge?—to their friendship…
about the author
Born in Romania, Adriana Schanen spent the first five years of her life in a fairly picturesque farming village, where she would never, ever, not in a million years sneak off to harass the neighbors’ goats and chickens….
In spite of their home’s beauty, it was indeed the 1970s, which means the country was still oppressed by Romania’s communist government. Her father managed to get the family out of the country and into asylum in Austria, before moving to Chicago, Illinois, where Adriana and her brother grew up.
Adriana took up figure skating at a competitive level, but although she loved to skate, competitions made her more terrified than thrilled. Despite her anxiety, she did grow up to teach skating at the University of Illinois!
Graduate school saw Adriana in New York City, and afterwards she got a job in fashion. However, all this time, slowly by surely, she had started giving in to her writing bug. After meeting and marrying her husband and having two daughters, Adriana finally had a draft of a book with which she was satisfied. That book became Quinny & Hopper.
When not writing and not wrangling her kids, Adriana can, of course, be found reading, watching movies, and sometimes, albeit badly, playing the piano.
