about the book
Rebel McKenzie is not like a lot of kids: her great passion in life is paleontology. She wants more than anything to spend her summer at the Ice Age Kids’ Dig and Safari, a camp for kids headed up by real paleontologists. Over the summer they will do their very own digging and discovering of prehistoric bones.
However, camp costs money. Lots of money.
When Rebel hears about the five hundred dollars that her annoying neighbor, Bambi Lovering, won in a beauty pageant—just for playing the ukulele behind her back!—Rebel decides that she, too, could win money in a beauty pageant.
How hard could it be?
Pretty hard, especially when your “dramatic” reading about life in the Pleistocene era is your only act…
about the author
Candice Ransom grew up in rural Centreville, Virginia, where mysteries and adventures were in short supply. That is why she made up stories about herself with herself as the hero! While she was jealous of her town cousins, who had sidewalks to ride bikes on and didn’t have to feed smelly hogs, Candice loved her outdoorsy childhood, where she could take walks through the woods and knew every bird by its song.
She was, from an early age, going to be a “writer-detective-vet-artist,” but slowly, one by one, all those life plans fell away, until in her teenage years only “writer” was left. Candice was fine with that, and decided to become a children’s book writer, as she has always loved such books.
Well past the time where most people were comfortable with it, Candice carried around a grubby stuffed elephant named Ellsworth. She still has Ellsworth today—he even has his own blog, and stars in some of her teen fiction novels called Time Spies.
Today Candice still lives in Virginia, but now in the town of Fredericksburg, a city where Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Robert E. Lee walked and thought. Every day she gets up, feeds her husband and their cats, and then goes to the computer to write. Candice is sure she will write forever, partly because it pays the bills, but mostly because it is great fun!
