about the book

All of the colonies are ruled by Magisters, the magical British upper-class. Since the failed American Revolution, the rebels are an underground society of mechanics and engineers. What better way to fight magic than with science?

Verity Newton knew life in New York City would be more exciting than with her professor father, but she didn’t think that her train into the city would be robbed by bandits. Thankfully, they didn’t take anything from her.

She also didn’t think she’d become a spy.

Her position as governess for a wealthy Magister family puts Verity in a unique position to advance the rebel’s cause. But if she’s to do so, she’ll have to reveal her own secret….

As a little girl, Shanna Swendson was always making up stories in her head. She’d even act them act them out with her Fisher-Price people and Barbie dolls. It wasn’t till she was twelve that Shanna realized that she could write the stories down.

Shanna may have majored in broadcasting news, but she didn’t limit her classes to those required for her degree. In preparation for writing novels, she took fencing, the search for extraterrestrial life, psychology, and parageography (the geography of imaginary lands).

After publishing a handful of novels, Shanna’s day-job demanded more time, so she wasn’t able to write nearly as much as she wanted. That chapter of her life has come to a close, giving her a lot more time to focus on creating novels.

When Shanna isn’t writing, she loves reading. Watching science fiction TV shows, singing in the church choir, and ballet lessons also fill her time.

Shanna lives in Irving, Texas, with too many books and a Christmas cactus.
