about the book

Mare Barrow lives in a world divided by Red and Silver. She is a Red, ordinary and with red blood. The elites of society are Silver, with silver blood and in possession of magical powers because of it.

Mare gets by as a thief in her impoverished rural village, until everything changes. Quite by accident, Mare summons lightning from her fingertips. No Red is ever supposed to be able to summon magic, but she has done so. And it happened in the presence of the king, princes, and the nobles of the land, during a ceremony to choose the future queen.

This impossibility—that a Red could have magic—must be covered up at once. The king, pretending Mare is a lost Silver princess, immediately announces her engagement to one of his own sons. But Mare has no love for the Silver elites. She risks everything to help the Scarlet Guard, a growing rebellion of Reds who want to govern themselves.

Helping the Scarlet Guard is helping herself, as she is practically a captive in the Silver castle. However, the cost of being discovered may be too high, and her heart may not survive it.

Victoria Aveyard’s hometown is East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, but she divides her time between there and Los Angeles, as she graduated with a BFA in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California. After a terrifying year of unemployment, Victoria, having spent the time writing a novel instead of a screenplay, got Red Queen, her debut, published.

Victoria is an avid movie-goer and uses Twitter entirely too much. Some of her proudest achievements include riding a horse in the mountains of Montana and finding her way to Edinburgh from London without resorting to a GPS.
