about the book
The Petersons have a normal busy home. Mom is a reporter, and Dad is a firefighter. There are three kids, Lizzie, Charles, and the littlest, Bean. They also have a dog, Buddy. What makes their home unique—and a little crazier than most—is that they foster puppies until the orphaned, lost, abandoned, or abused dogs can find a forever home. Lizzie and Charles are responsible for caring for these temporary visitors.
Lizzie is the dog expert. She knows all about the different breeds and training methods. Charles just loves all the pups that find their way into his home. And he especially loves the newest addition, Sweetie. She is a soft brown miniature poodle and is extremely smart.
Since Sweetie learns tricks so quickly, Charles and his pals Sammy and David decide to train the pup to do several circus tricks. The boys are hoping these tricks will quicken the puppy’s adoption into a good home, and they have the perfect home in mind. One that belongs to a circus clown!
But while the boys spend afternoon after afternoon in David’s gymnasium-type basement training Sweetie, Buddy gets jealous. Charles really wants to do everything he can to get Sweetie the best home possible, but he doesn’t want to upset Buddy any more than he is. Is there any solution to this problem?
about the author
Ellen Miles was born in New York City, but now she lives in the perfect place, Vermont, where she writes in a little playhouse-sized cabin in the woods. She loves being outside—working on the family’s farm, hiking the tall mountains, biking the shady back roads, swimming in the cold clear pods, and exploring her beautiful state. In the winter she loves to ski.
She also loves puppies and kittens, and that is why she writes so much about them. She says, “Dogs are always happy to see you, and always excited about what’s going to happen next whether it’s a ride in the car, a game, or just cuddling up on the couch. Dogs are also great for telling secrets to, and for comforting you when you’re sad.”
Just like the characters in her stories, Ellen fosters puppies. She has shared her life with many canine and feline friends. She has a new dog in her house, a hound named Zipper who keeps her laughing every day.
Ellen also loves, loves, loves reading. Her favorite authors are Beverly Cleary and Dorothy Canfield Fisher. She doesn’t have any kids…unless you count her furry critters. And she has lots of curly hair…and no middle name!
