about the book
Tucker Pierce is celebrating his high school football team’s latest touchdown when the star running back drops dead.
Before Pemberwick Island knows it, military helicopters and parachutists invade the sky. Apparently they’re a part of SYLO, a secret branch of the U.S. Navy. Their commander, Captain Granger, says Pemberwick residents have been hit by a lethal virus and must be quarantined.
Tucker isn’t so sure. He saw his teammate drop dead without any warning. He saw a strange explosion over the ocean. He’s also tasted the Ruby and experienced its powers.
SYLO is hiding something and Tucker is determined to figure out what it is.
about the author
Donald James “DJ” MacHale was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. While in school, he worked collecting eggs at a poultry farm, engraving trophies, and washing dishes at a steakhouse. He also played football and ran track.
After graduating from New York University in film production, he wrote several TV series and movies for kids that aired on Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel, HBO, Showtime, PBS, and Discovery Kids. He worked on “Tower of Terror”, “Chris Cross”, “Flight 29 Down”, and “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
D.J. is also the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pendragon series and the Morpheus Road series.
D.J. plots everything out before he starts writing. So all ten Pendragon books were outlined before he even began the first book! This doesn’t mean he sticks to the outline, but at least he knows where the series is headed.
If he were not a writer, DJ likes to think he would be an astronaut, but he knows that his bad eyesight and bad math skills make this unrealistic. So with his astronaut career already done, he probably would be a teacher.
He is a long-suffering New York Jets fan. He also likes backpacking, scuba diving, and skiing.
DJ lives in Southern California with his wife Evangeline and daughter Keaton. They have two elderly goldfish, a golden retriever, and a cat.
