about the book
One morning thirteen-year-old Jack McKinley is awakened from a dream involving a griffin attack. His Rube Goldberg-rigged alarm clock saved him from being eaten, maybe. As he rushes out to school, Jack collapses in the street. Next thing he knows he is no longer in Belleville, Indiana, but rather on the island of… Atlantis?
Or at least, what’s left of Atlantis. And in a hospital run by Professor Bhegad.
Professor Bhegad and his assistant Torquin set out the score for Jack: he is a descendant of the old race of Atlanteans. His condition, the reason he collapsed in the street, is a product of his genes. He is getting too strong, too fast, for his body. He has about six months, and then he will die. So will three other teens—Aly, Cass, and Marco—who have all come down with the same illness.
The illness has resulted from the Atlanteans losing their power, seven magic symbols that helped them rule and make great advances in technology. Those seven symbols were scattered when Atlantis sunk. Now they are connected in some way to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. For the four teens to live, they will have to find and reunite all seven symbols before it is too late.
The first one is the Colossus of Rhodes….
about the author
Peter Lerangis was born in Brooklyn, New York, right during Hurricane Diane. From an early age, Peter could communicate fairly well, especially for a toddler. Peter’s family is Greek, and that means large. Growing up he had many cousins to play with, as well as doting aunts and uncles.
In high school Peter was in the bands—jazz, marching, and concert—until a friend of his pointed out to him how much better looking the choir girls were. Peter shifted to singing, and has been in love with song (and girls) ever since.
Anyway, somehow he got into Harvard, and was classmates with people like Bill Gates (of Microsoft fame) and future Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. For some reason he majored in biochemistry. Then, while trying to lift a police car, his college career came to an end. Then he began studying law!
He never really went anywhere with law, and instead became a man with three careers—editing, writing, and acting. When he managed to convince his girlfriend, Tina deVaron, to marry him, and then have a son— Nick—with him, he switched careers—writing full-time. After their second son—Joseph—was born in 1990, Peter embarked on ten years of furious writing, and now he has over a hundred books published!
Today Peter and Tina live in a house in New York, exactly fifty steps from Central Park.
