about the book
Emilia Justina’s father is human, and her mother an archangel. When demons attack and her father is murdered, the fierce semi-angelic hero goes after the Devil King, Lord Satan Jacob, and his general, Alciel. Defeating this evil supernatural entity, she forces him and his minion to jump through a portal from the fantasy world of Enta Isla to the middle of modern day Tokyo!
Once there, all three are unable to return to their own place and time. What’s worse, they find that all their magical abilities are gone! How on earth are they going to survive this crazy hectic technology-filled new world? Let’s just say, it will involve “going native”!
Taking a new name, Emi Yusa, Emilia assumes a human identity and is forced to make a living as a call center agent. For the Devil King, this new life is even more difficult; it is tough trying to pay the rent, get health insurance, and cope with an imposing landlady when your only skill is conquering worlds! He also takes human form and a new name, Sadou Mao, and to make ends meet, he slings fries part-time at a chain burger joint, MgRonalds! Let’s face it, readers, this whole premise screams funny!
While the extremely frugal and endearingly adorkable Alciel (new name Shiro Ashiya) stays home unsuccessfully trying to manage everyday domestic duties, the very frustrated Sadou Mao tries working his way up the management chain. To make matters even more complicated, a young fellow employee has a major crush on him, and a fallen angel, Lucifer, shows up. If he can take the Devil King down, he hopes to regain his place in heaven! He’s followed by even more demons, a church Inquisitor, and some of Emilia’s old companions!
Just when the Devil King thinks he’s got everything well in hand, he runs into Emi Yusa on a rainy sidewalk. Can he take this pesky heroine down in the middle of the Tokyo streets? Can the moral and righteous Emilia destroy the Devil King, knowing that in this time and place, it is against the law!
And even more importantly, can the two work together when Japan is attacked!?!
about the author/illustrator
The Devil is a Part-Timer began as a Japanese light novel in 2010. A light novel is a short book with a few manga-styled illustrations. Written by Satoshi Wagahara and illustrated by Oniku 029, it was followed by a seven-volume manga series followed in 2012 and that was followed by an anime television series in 2013. Satoshi Wagahara won the prestigious Dengenki Novel Prize for his work.
Though many hours of research turned up little personal information about Satoshi, we do know that he made his very own MgRonald costume, complete with paper cap. Hopefully one day, he’ll come to a comic con in the states and we’ll get a photo!
The graphic novel was translated by Kevin Gifford, who has received rave reviews for his work. The light and witty banter was hard to translate well!
