about the book

Tenth grader Hallelujah “Hallie” Calhoun was once a happy girl, surrounded by friends. She was confident, loved to sing, and had an unyielding faith in God. However, after the preacher’s handsome and seemingly perfect son, Luke starts awful rumors about her, her reputation, self-worth, and confidence are shot. She stops speaking to everyone—her family and her friends—not that she has any friends any longer. Luke’s vicious bullying and lies have caused her friends to abandon her completely.

Six months after the gossip spread, and despite her sorrow and loneliness, Hallie attends a church camp in the Smoky Mountains, called Hiking with Him. She doesn’t expect much from the experience, and things go from bad to worse when she gets lost with two other campers; one, her former best friend Jonah, and the second, an outgoing new girl who seems sweet and friendly, called Rachel.

Though Rachel seems nice enough, and is ignorant of the rumors, Hallie has lost the ability to trust, making a difficult situation harder. Besides struggling with feelings of fear, hatred, love, and forgiveness, the kids are facing freezing, nasty weather, raging hunger, and health problems. Hallie will have to face her past with Jonah and the three of them must to work as a team if they are to have any hope for survival.teachingbooks-book

Edge of Nowhere by John Smelcer
Native Alaskan Seth plays too many video games and eats too much junk food. The scale tells him that much. His dad says he’s soft, lazy, and wouldn’t last a day in the wilderness. When Seth helps his father on a fishing expedition, he unexpectedly gets washed overboard with his dog Tucker. Seth is thrown into full-blown survival mode, living off of raw fish and avoiding polar bears while his father frantically searches for him in the surrounding islands.
