about the book

Twelve-year-old Hale Jordan was born into the Sub Rosa Society, or the SRS—a super-elite organization of spies. His parents are two of SRS’s best, until they mysteriously go missing while on a mission. Hale decides to go after them, which is no easy task as he is still in training and can’t seem to pass the physical exam to become a field agent.

It doesn’t help that his physique is less “sleek superspy,” and more “chubby kid,” or as his mom describes him, “big-boned.” His classmates even call him Hale the Whale, but he is determined not to let that get in the way of becoming one of the best spies in the SRS, like his parents.

When Hale begins his search, he infiltrates what he thinks is an evil organization. Instead, it turns out to be a horribly funded secret government organization now run by just one man. After speaking with the man, Hale becomes suspicious of the SRS, and hacks their system with the help of his friend Ben (an inventor) and his sister, Beatrix (an athletic computer genius). He quickly learns that his parents are marked targets to be taken out as soon as possible by the SRS.

In a race against time, Hale must become a secret double-agent and figure out how to save his parents before it’s too late.

Jackson Pearce is a self-proclaimed 32-year-old band geek who loves retelling fairy tales, stories about magical creatures, and the adventures of superspies. Growing up, she read everything she could get her hands on. Some of her favorite series were The Boxcar Children and The Indian in the Cupboard. When she was twelve, Jackson was angry that her librarian couldn’t find her a book about a girl, horses, and magical creatures, so she wrote her own book instead and then never stopped writing.

She graduated from the University of Georgia, where she majored in English and minored in Philosophy. She had had a colorful work life, writing obituaries, working as a waitress at a biker bar, and also as a receptionist. Once, she even auditioned for the circus!

Pearce currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, which she thinks it’s the best city in the whole world. When she isn’t writing, she is coaching colorguard or winterguard, or is spending time with her very fat cat and tiny dog.
