about the book
David is in awe of Ryan Pasternak, an older kid at his elementary school who can draw a Lamborghini from memory. Then he meets Becky.
She’s drawing on a park bench. “Whoah. You’re good… You’re like…really good.”
“Thank you. Do you like drawing?”
“I love drawing. But I’m not as good as you. I’m pretty terrible compared to you.”
“Well, I’ve been practicing for a long time…”
Because David really wants to learn more about drawing, Becky starts teaching him (and you!) all about shading, negative space, compositions, and more. Follow along with the lessons and try the exercises yourself!
about the author/illustrator
Mark Crilley began drawing as soon as he could hold a pencil. This passion led him to major in art at Kalamazoo College, where he befriended Caldecott winner David Small.
After graduating from college, Mark taught English in both Taiwan and Japan. During his time in Japan, he created the character Akiko who went on to star in her own comic book series and ten novels. One of Mark’s other series, Miki Falls, is named after his wife.
His YouTube channel features how-to-draw videos on almost every topic you can imagine. He uploads a new video every single Friday. The channel has had more than 330 million views since it began in November 2006! This success earned Mark a place as “one of the top 25 Most Subscribed to Gurus on YouTube.”
Mark’s favorite place to create and illustrate is sitting on a couch or a chair with a portable board on his lap. He doesn’t like hunching over desks or drawing tables.
He lives in Michigan with wife, Miki, and their two children, Matthew and Mio.
