about the book
Turns out, I’m more like my sister than I originally thought.
Ever since my parents died ten years ago, Ivy and I had both been living with my grandpa in Montana on a farm until Ivy left home for D.C. after high school. Ivy’s…intense. I hadn’t seen her much, until recently, when grandpa’s forgetting episodes became worse and worse.
Now, I’m here in D.C. with Ivy. I can’t tell whether I should love her or be afraid of her…or both. So, I guess I’ll come out with it: Ivy fixes stuff. And I don’t mean machines, unless you count “political machines” in that category. She’s called “The Fixer” and she can make any problem—no matter how messy—go away. Of course, the price has to be right. She’s supporting me now, too. Ivy takes crap from no one. She’s busy, powerful, and strict as hell. Nothing like me, I thought.
I suppose Ivy’s penchant for “fixing” preceded even me, when she signed me up to attend Hardwicke Academy. Suddenly, a whole crowd is interested in Tess Kendrick (me), wanting help with their problems. Turns out, I’m pretty good. I guess knowing how to castrate farm animals can be considered a useful skill off the farm, too.
I’ve got to talk to Ivy though. Something’s different about this new “situation” at school. There are ties to Capitol Hill and Ivy may be able to help me, or she at least might know something. Like I said, I didn’t think I’d be teaming up with my badass sister, but I don’t know if I have a choice on this one.
about the author
Jennifer Lynn Barnes (but you can call her Jen) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has held various titles throughout her life: competitive cheerleader, dancer, debutante, volleyball player, teen model, comic book geek, primate cognition researcher, and an aficionado of lemurs.
For as long as she can remember, in spite of these different, conflicting interests, Jen has been writing. She finished her first full book in high school—her “practice book,” which no one will ever, ever see. The summer after her freshman year in college she wrote Golden, her first non-practice novel.
In 2006, Jen graduated from Yale University, having studied cognitive science, and received a Fulbright scholarship to work at Cambridge for post-graduate work. Now she is back in the United States working on her Ph.D. and writing when she can.
