about the book

Cassandra “Cassie” Hobbes was taught by her mother Lorelai to observe people as Sherlock Holmes did, and construct their lives and motivations based on those observations. You just have to look carefully for people’s BPE index—behavior, personality, environment—and you can construct a pretty good idea of who they are, why they are where they are, and what they are there for.

For several years this ability to profile people helped Cassie’s mom fake being a psychic. Then Lorelai was kidnapped and murdered.

Now living with her father’s family, Cassie works as a waitress near her father’s Air Force base in Europe. One day at the restaurant Cassie is approached by an FBI agent who tells her he wants to recruit her to a group of teens called the Naturals—teens with profiling abilities just like hers. Cassie agrees, and is set working on a list of cold cases, searching for motivations and connections wherever she can find them.

The cold cases become very hot when a new string of murders matches exactly the way Cassie’s mother’s killer operated. Then the killer turns his eye on Cassie.

about the author

Jennifer Lynn Barnes (but you can call her Jen) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has been many things throughout her life: competitive cheerleader, dancer, debutante, volleyball player, teen model, comic book geek, primate cognition researcher, and an aficionado of lemurs.

For as long as she can remember, in spite of all these different and, you would think, conflicting interests, Jen has been writing. She finished her first full book in high school—her “practice book,” which no one will ever, ever see. The summer after her freshman year in college she wrote Golden, her first non-practice novel.

In 2006, Jen graduated from Yale University, having studied cognitive science, and got a Fulbright scholarship to work at Cambridge for post-graduate work. Now she is back in the United States working on her Ph.D. and writing when she can.

Killer Instinct (Naturals, Book 2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
The Naturals, a group of teen proteges, have been restricted to solving cold cases for the FBI. But that doesn’t stop Cassie, Dean, and the rest of the group from looking into a murder on a nearby college campus. The murderer is using the same methods as an imprisoned serial killer: Dean’s father. Will the Naturals be able to outplay the killer at his own game?
