about the book
Princess Pinecone’s birthday is fast approaching, and she knows just what to ask her royal Viking parents to get her: Instead of the soft sweaters she usually gets, of which she has an entire wardrobe stacked full from previous birthdays, this year she wants a BIG, STRONG horse! A horse fit for a WARRIOR PRINCESS! Pinecone may be small in size, but where she lacks height she makes up for it in enthusiasm. She will ride it into battle and make a name for herself.
When the day arrives, what Princess Pinecone finds instead is a pony, the FATTEST, ROUNDEST, FARTIEST pony imaginable. Did her parents really think this dumpy little beast was a warhorse? Well, she can’t very well say no to a birthday present—that would be just rude—so Pinecone accepts the pony, and takes it to her room. There the pony begins eating things it shouldn’t, and farting a lot more than anything ever should.
A great battle breaks out between her people and Otto the Awful. Though she fears the pony will humiliate her, Princess Pinecone mounts up and rides to war on the pony anyway. What will Otto the Awful and his warriors do when they see such a funny sight?
about the author/illustrator
Kate Beaton was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada. She studied history in New Brunswick and the Mount Allison University, a school which produces more Rhodes scholars per capita than anywhere else in North America (she was not one of them).
After graduating with her history degree, Kate paid it off in Alberta doing work for a museum. However, all through college she edited and drew comics on the side for the student paper, which is what led her to become Internet famous for her web comic “Hark! A Vagrant.”
After working in Alberta she moved to Ontario to draw pictures, and from there to Halifax, New York, finally ending up in Toronto.
Maybe next time she will move to the moon, who knows…
